I Am Beyond Excited Today

After seven years of waiting, the Lord is giving us our own home again.  The fault of the seven year wait is none other than my own, however, a lesson has been learned (that I will explain at another time, in another post).  I am forever indebted to my Father in heaven - He provides everything I need - not only is the spiritual, but also in the physical.  I can't wait to share all of it with you, but for now I must go sign papers and get a house!  ##gratefulchildofthemosthighGod

{this moment} ~ A Friday ritual. A single photo - no words - capturing a moment from the week. A simple, special, extraordinary moment. A moment I want to pause, savor and remember. If you're inspired to do the same, leave a link to your 'moment' in the comments over at soulemama for all to find and see.

They Had a Sister Sleep-Over

...and Sydney was in charge of the preparations this time.

She gathered all sorts of things from around the house and transformed
the spare room into a wonderland; everything...

From a quaint "sitting area"...

(tootsie rolls are a must!)

An eating area donned with fresh picked flowers...
(although I doubt either of them sat at the table to eat!)

To an arts, craft, and library!

Even Rhenay was invited!

(she's a sister too, ya know!)

Milk Pitcher

What was once used as a milk pitcher on the breakfast table will be used for displaying beautiful finds around the property in the fall.  I'm in love with the past.  I find such beauty in the simple every day items.

Pancakes (vegan)

1 cup whole [fresh ground] wheat
1 tbls baking soda
1/2 tsp Real Salt
1 cup milk (we use almond)
1 tbls pure maple syrup
1/2 cup chopped nuts of choice (walnuts above)
1/2 banana sliced per pancake
(drizzle with warmed maple syrup)

Mix dry ingredients and add milk and syrup. Allow to sit for a few minutes.  Scoop by 1/4 cup onto a griddle of choice and cook until tops appear to be bubbling - flip.  While cakes are cooking, heat a cast iron skillet and place chopped nuts in to warm.  Keep them moving or they'll burn!

Stack your cakes - however many you want - decorate with chopped/roasted nuts, bananas, and drizzle heavily with yummy, warm maple syrup.  Indulge!

NOTE:  since this recipe doesn't have the normal oil in it - you will need to grease your griddle (coconut oil works great - healthful and yummy!) .  If you have non-stick it might work - I don't have one so proceed with caution :o)  Also... without the oil the cakes don't brown quite the same.

Hello Spring, Goodnight Fire

It's been a fun day.  It's been a productive day.  It's been a beautiful Spring day - really the first and we were outside all day enjoying every bit of it.  It didn't end until nearly 9:00 this evening after we cleaned out a lot of brush down by the creek at the back of our property and had a very large bon-fire.

Amazing how even "weeds" appear so beautiful when you are so starved for warmth!

The fire, however, was the highlight of the evening.  The pile of brush stood nearly six feet tall and when it finally took off - IT TOOK OFF and burned...

...and burned...

...and burned...

...and it's still burning, but we're letting it as we head to bed.

Thrifted Quilt Top

I was at Goodwill the other day and found this hanging in the linen section...

...pure vintage beauty!

Imagine the hours someone spent piecing this top.

Imagine the hours it has saved me!

I have pieced before, but never quilted.  I guess this is a new-to-me winter project waiting to be finished!  I'm anticipating the accomplishment I'll feel when this one is done!
When finished it will be a full size quilt.

Wasp Nests

Lots of things to do around the house since Spring is upon us...

There were many years of wasps nests in the eves and the lip of the chimney...

Luckily, my husband [cheerfully] volunteered to rid us of them :o)

They were welcomed on the ground as some serious science exploration.  We learned that wasps make their nest by chewing and digesting the wood from trees to make their nests!
Wood pulp - who would have thought?

Sewing Machine (Re)Gifted

A wonderful neighbor of ours lost his wife not too long ago.  This was her machine.  She wanted so desperately to learn to sew and this was a gift to her right before she became sick.
She never got the chance to use it.

He thought it should be given a new home with an owner that had the same aspirations.  Therefore he knocked on our door with a brand new (older) machine in hand.  We already had one, but Ali really wanted her own - to learn to sew on.  And since school is done, she has started to do just that.

Baked Brown Rice

Ever make brown rice and be sadly dismayed by the fact that it seems to be a glob of wallpaper paste?  Me too!  Until I came across this recipe on the food network... Oh. My. GOODNESS!  This is the only way I'll make brown rice now!  Just trust me and try it...

1 1/2 cups long grain brown rice
2 1/2 cups water
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper (opt)

Preheat oven to 375ºF.

Boil the water and add the butter and salt. Stir to dissolve salt and melt butter.

Place the rice in an 8" casserole dish. Pour the boiling water mixture over the rice and stir.

Cover with foil and bake on the middle rack for 1 hour.

Fluff with fork and serve.

This rice also refrigerates and reheats fairly well, but it's best freshly made.

Ali-ism; A New Brown-E Recipe

I come home from running errands today...
Ali meets me at the door as she puts a covered pan on the table to accompany an already baked pan of brownies.  The following conversation takes place...
ALI:  "I found a new recipe for brownies on Pinterest today, so I made a pan of our standard (just in case the new recipe isn't any good).
ME:  you have them covered, sweet-pea, won't that make them soggy?
ALI:  that's what the recipe said to do...
ME:  well, ok... so can I see them taste them?
ALI:  sure!

(as she uncovers and reveals.... wha-la!  A pan of freshly prepared brown E's!)

And she exclaims:

Ali is the jokester of the family... she can't be serious! Can you tell?
She always keeps me on my toes :o)

Mr. BlueJay

Covertly lured by 9-lives kitty cat food, for photography purposes alone :o)

I found the cutest (yet ugliest) little hummingbird *thing* at Goodwill the other day...
It appeared to be a wind chime and I wasn't sure if it was silver or brass, but either way they were coming home with me.... When I got home, Ali and I sat down and started polishing - they went from this...

to this...

with this...

Yep... Use ketchup to remove tarnish from brass (and copper).
Squeeze ketchup onto a cloth and rub it on pots and pans. Rinse with warm water and dry with a towel.
They should go back to their brassy/coppery color in minutes.

They're going to hang in the new house by one of the doors so they can make their sweet little sound each time the door is opened!

All for less than a dollar :o)
